Le mont Chiniac

Le Chiniac dominates the town of St-Agrève. Stroll along its narrow streets and at the top you'll find a circular view of the plateau, the valleys, the Velay and Vivarais mountains and, on a clear day, the Alps.

Situated on the border between the plateau and the valleys, Mount Chiniac rises to a height of 1126 metres. This was the birthplace of the village, whose early name "Chinacum" indicates its Gallo-Roman origins. The name Saint-Agrève, adopted in the Middle Ages, is that of a bishop from Le Puy-en-Velay who died there at the beginning of the 7th century.
Admire the Belvedere at the summit, where the view is enhanced by "Le partage des eaux", an open-air trail made visible by the installation of "mires" at six belvedere sites, including that of Chiniac.
Discover the historic centre of the village in the footsteps of André Rochedy, and explore the old town in the footsteps of the childhood poet from Saint-Agrévois. The walk starts at the Place de la République and takes you through the old town via the Porte Notre-Dame de l'Estra. The "Old Road to Vienne" will take you to the chapel and fountain. The fountain is said to be the spring that sprang up where Agrippa's head rolled off the top of the Chiniac when he was beheaded.
The "Chante-coucou" family hike takes you to the top of Mont Chiniac via lanes and paths in the beautiful Rèche forest. On the way, you'll pass by the chapel and the Velay Express tourist train line.
