The origins of La Chèze Castle, located in Le Cheylard, go back to the 13th century. Discover the history of this medieval castle marked by some great events.
Located in a strategic and dominant position, the oldest mention of the La Chèze domain go back to 1278. It’s enlarged and modified at the end of Middle Ages and in the Renaissance. The castle of La Cheze was the property of Tournon de la Chèze family until the middle of the 16th century then it passed, by marriage, to the Tersac family. It’s a witness of religion wars and especially Huguenots’ revolts which have strongly affected the region between 1621 and 1628. Enlarged and modified over the centuries, the castle is tragically burnt down at the end of the Second World War. Deserted during a long time, it has been, since 1989, restored and repaired until 2018 by the volunteers of the Association for the Safeguard of Boutière’s Heritage, supported by the city and partners. Today, the castle is listed as an Huguenot heritage.
Since 2019, the Town Hall opens the castle to visits in July and August. An invitation to discover its history and architecture through the centuries, with the first interior fittings that will immerse you in the times of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
